UN Council of Universties & EEAS
Side event on the abolition of the death penalty – The death penalty is a violation of human rights. In the case of drugs offences, the use of the death penalty is often arbitrary and discriminatory towards minority populations.
Capital punishment does not deter criminality. Focus should focus on restructuring social, health and justice systems.
International organisations should provide support in upholding human rights. Donor governments must also play this part. Human rights must be a the forefront of systems that tackle drug use and traffkcing. We do not believe in the war on drugs. We urge UNODC to take necessary measures and collaborate with UN human rights bodies to abolish the death penalty. Member states should adopt a multi-disciplinary approach to drugs. We encourage collaboration between UN, governments, NGOs and academics.
