We are concerned about the growth of trafficking through West Africa from Latin America as well as the transit of narcotics from the Golden triangle in South East Asia. Drug trafficking has created new kinds of threats to the stability in West Africa that is made worse by the problems that already exist there, such as judicial and law enforcement corruption. Drug trafficking also threatens the democratisation process in Africa.
Consumption in the West must be tackled if we want to tackle the global drug problem. We also note that drug trafficking must be tackled by strengthening national, regional and international cooperation. A lot more work is needed to build on the successes that have been made so far.
