Plenary Statement of the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (DEVIDA) of Peru

Peru noted its strategic cooperation with other countries in the region and suggested Peru could serve as a model for similar efforts elsewhere. The speaker said Peru has implemented licit cultivation on 280,000 hectares of land. This experience could be replicated in other countries. Peru has shared its experience with other countries in Asia including Myanmar and Laos in the effort to learn more about sustainable development policies.

The speaker also said Peru would like to partner with Thailand to sponsor a conference on alternative development.

Peru is also focusing on use and said users of cocaine are as young as 13-years-old. The age of users is dropping. Cocaine use is exacerbated by its low cost in Peru. A gram costs just $3 US dollars.

Peru is also working to organise a symposium on precursor chemicals.
