CND day 1 – Round table on joint responsibility: Pakistan’s statement

There have been some success stories in other parts of the world, including Latin America. But this has not happened in this region. I address European and Middle Eastern countries, recipients of opium. Demand reduction and awareness raising are essential. We are doing our best as transit countries, but the production is as high as ever and so is demand. In Pakistan, to display our shared responsibility, we have declared Lahoud as a drug free country. We hope to do the same think in other cities. Demand reduction is important, but so is supply reduction. No matter how much law enforcement is used, we can only reduce supply through informers, and these should be provided at the international level. Destination countries should be able to support us and our informers.
