Opening Session – Plenary: Afghanistan

Starts off by pointing out recent large seizures of heroin/ morphine. We have continued to successfully reduce illicit crop cultivation.
Poverty and unemployed which continues to aid the work of the drug traffickers. We need alternative livelihood options for poor farmers. With help from the US and UK, we have been implementing a number of new projects aimed at creating new alternative livelihoods.

We will continue these programs to divert people away from cultivation.
If we don’t embrace alternative livelihood, the people will turn away from the government and go back into illicit drug cultivation.

We cant solve poppy cultivation problem without employment and livelihood solutions.
